Y5&6 Kelham Island WW2 trip

Year 5 and 6 enjoyed a day at Kelham Island Museum in Sheffield in February.

They started their day exploring some suitcases used by WW2 evacuees. The children looked for clues about who the suitcase might have belonged to then presented their findings to the group.

We then explored the museum, handed bullets, grenades and studied the role of women during the war.

After lunch we were able to see and stand inside an Anderson Air Raid Shelter! We listened to radio broadcasts and how the air raid siren would have sounded. We also explored more items used during WW2 including a hot water bottle, games, helmets and gas masks and planned a meal using rationed items.

Finally, before we set off home we saw the most powerful steam engine in Europe in action!
